Lot 953
Important Collection of 450+ Signed Photos & Covers by the Men and Women Who Flew in the Shuttle Program STS-1 through STS-118. A spectacular archive beautifully organized in seven (7) sleeved binders encompassing a great majority of the Shuttle Missions and the men and women who flew on them. Organized alphabetically, many have a color 8 x 10" portrait signed coupled with a signed cover commemorating that particular astronaut's mission. The amount of dedication and in many cases travel, to assemble this collection impresses. While not every astronaut is represented between STS-1 through STS-113, but overall at least one is represented. There are three crew members represented here from The Challenger Disaster (STS-51-L); A beautiful signed and inscribed 8 x 10" NASA color litho by "Dick" Scobee, Commander of the mission. A handwritten note by Payload Specialist Gregory Jarvis who writes "I have been moved to FLT 51-L. I am returning your covers. Regards, Greg Jarvis" in response to the collector who had sent covers for him to sign a portion of that correspondence on the back of Jarvis' note. Finally, a beautiful signature on a cover postmarked on the launch date, Jan 28, 1986 by S. Christa McAuliffe. the first of President Reagan's "Teacher In Space Program" and selected from a staggering 11,000 applicants. Her back up Barbara Morgan is included in collection (two signed NASA lithos) after the disaster and became Teacher in Space Designee and gave lectures throughout the country. But she returned to NASA and 12 years later was selected to be a Mission Specialist and flew on STS-118. (There are no pieces from STS-107, the Columbia re-entry disaster)

Some shuttle astronauts have numerous signed photo and covers. Bruce McCandless is an example but the extra signed photos of him piloting the MMU unit in space is one of the more breathtaking photos in Shuttle history.

Notables included are several signed pieces by Astronauts Jerry L. Ross and Franklin R. Chang-Diaz who flew the most missions and Astronaut Story Musgrave who is the only man to fly on all five shuttles. Fantastic collection. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

Martin Marietta Aerospace Atmospheric Science Facility Preliminary Design Model, December 1972. Project spearheaded by Martin Marietta Aerospace for a reusable, manned, general-purpose optical research facility: from a PDF file found on line:
Studies of the emission and scattering from the atmosphere, of the solar flux impinging on the Earth, and of the extinction of this radiation at sunrise and sunset, have been made in the entire spectral region from the extreme ultraviolet to the far-infrared. These studies have been made by many observers using balloon, rocket probe, and manned and unmanned orbital platforms, and the data obtained have led to a vast improvement in our knowledge of the basic processes that control both the Earth's atmosphere, from the ground to several Earth radii in altitude, and man's environment. Manned orbital vehicles offer an excellent platform for such studies.

Offered is an extremely appealing concept model for such a facility. 6 x 15 x 7" model is in excellent condition, but has an internal pressure fissure that does not break through the curved plexiglass on one end and hardly a distraction. Immensely appealing. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

STS-41-B to STS-41D, Collection of Seven Signed Photos & Covers, 40 Signatures Including Sally Ride, Judy Reznik, Ron McNair & Dick Scobee. NASA flew a number of Space Shuttle missions in the early and mid-1980s with designations derived from STS-41. The ambiguity was the result of a NASA decision to change designation of missions starting in Fiscal Year 1984 and to accommodate a dramatically increased launch manifest. Previously, missions were designated in the order they were flown. The difference in mission numbers and the years flown gets confusing because NASA returned to numbering missions in the order flown in 1988. STS-41B (Challenger) Crew signed photo and crew signed cover that does include Ron McNair, Mission Specialist and the second African American in space who perished in the Challenger disaster two years later. STS-41C (Challenger) Crew Signed photo and cover which include Dick Scobee who piloted this flight and then promoted as commander of STS-51-L which disintegrated during takeoff. STS 41-D First flight of Shuttle Discovery, delayed due to a mission abort two months previously. Crew signed photo and cover which includes Judith Resnik, the second American woman in Space who was a mission specialist aboard STS-51-L (Challenger) that disintegrated on takeoff.
